China top exporter of sex toys, Hong Hai, Shenzhen
Beijing: China has emerged as the major exporter of sex toys with the country manufacturing about 70 percent of such instruments for the world.
China produces about 70 percent of sex toys for the world, Hong Hai, a Chinese sex toy manufacturer, was quoted as saying by the state-run China Daily.
China is the world leader in labor-intensive manufacturing and sex toy production is part of the manufacturing industry, so it is quite normal that China accounts for a high percentage, Hong Hai said.
Fifty percent of our customers are from the US and thirty percent are from Europe, said Hong Hai, who entered the sex toy industry in 2006. Last year, his company, Shenzhen Flower Bud Sex Toys Factory's turnover was between USD 1 million and USD 2 million.
We were originally a mold company before we started the adult product business, so when we got requests to make vibrators from an Japanese customer, we decided to enter the market.
Hong Hai's factory, Shenzhen Flower Bud Sex Toys Factory produces different types of sex toys, including vibrators, anal plugs, dildos, and fetish gears and they are exported at price ranging from 50 cents to USD 100.
The sex toy industry in China, with more than 1000 manufactures, has been worth about USD two billion a year for the past few years, Hong Hai said.
Meanwhile, a report released by China Market Research Center said that in just the first five months of this year, revenue reached USD 940 million.
The products included stimulus condoms, which account for 21.5 percent of the market, the report said.
